Texas Municipal Elections

A Guide for South Asian Voters

Local elections shape the policies that directly affect our families, neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. Many South Asian voters are highly engaged in national elections but may not realize that municipal elections often have the biggest impact on daily life.

SAAVETX Education Fund is committed to helping our community stay informed and participate in these important elections.

What Are PRIMARY RUNOFF Elections?

Primary runoff elections happen when no candidate in a party primary receives more than 50% of the vote. The top two candidates then advance to a runoff election to determine the final nominee.

These elections help decide who will represent political parties in the upcoming general election for offices across Texas.

Primary runoff elections can determine candidates for positions such as:

  • U.S. Senate

  • Lieutenant Governor

  • U.S. House

  • Texas Senate

  • Texas House

  • County Offices

  • Judicial Positions

  • Local Offices in Certain Districts

Every election matters - but runoff elections are often decided by very small margins. South Asian voters across Texas have the opportunity to help shape who represents our communities at every level of government.

When turnout is low, community participation becomes even more impactful. Showing up to vote in runoff elections helps ensure our voices are heard beyond just presidential election years.

How to Vote in a Primary Runoff

Texas uses an open primary system, meaning voters do not register with a political party in advance. However, when voting in a primary runoff election, voters must choose which party’s runoff they want to participate in.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you voted in the March primary election, you must vote in the same party’s runoff election.

  • If you did not vote in the March primary, you may choose to vote in either party’s runoff.

  • You can only vote in one party’s runoff election.

Runoff elections are often decided by very small margins, meaning your vote can have a major impact on who advances to the general election in November. What are we voting on?

What Are We Voting On?

On May 26th, Texans participating in primary runoff elections will vote to decide final party nominees in races where no candidate secured a majority vote during the primary election.

Texas has one of the fastest-growing South Asian populations in the country, and our communities continue to gain political influence. Participating in runoff elections is one more way we can build long-term civic power and ensure our communities are represented in the decisions that affect our daily lives.
