Texas Municipal Elections
A Guide for South Asian Voters
Local elections shape the policies that directly affect our families, neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. Many South Asian voters are highly engaged in national elections but may not realize that municipal elections often have the biggest impact on daily life.
SAAVETX Education Fund is committed to helping our community stay informed and participate in these important elections.
What Are Municipal Elections?
Municipal elections are local elections that determine leadership in cities, school districts, and local governing bodies across Texas.
These elections are typically non-partisan, meaning candidates do not run under political party labels.
Municipal elections determine who represents your community in positions such as:
Mayor
City Council
School Board Trustees
Community College Boards
Local District Boards
VISIT OUR CIVIC CENTER TO VOTE
Every election counts—but municipal elections are where change begins. This year, South Asians in Texas have the power to shape the future of our schools, neighborhoods, and cities. We just need to show up.
What are we voting on?
In 2026, Texans will cast ballots for school board, city council, mayors, and more. These local races control the decisions that affect our kids’ education, public safety, transportation, affordable housing, and everyday quality of life.
Yet while South Asians in Texas have one of the highest turnout rates in presidential elections, our participation in municipal elections lags behind.
CIVIC CENTER is designed to give South Asian voters tools to make informed decisions during elections. This app will:
Simplify Ballot Information: details about candidates, propositions, and policies on their specific ballot .
Identify Your Representatives: helps users discover who currently represents them ensuring they understand who is shaping policies that impact their lives.
Create Personalized Voting Plans: allows users to plan their voting day, locate polling places, and set reminders to ensure they never miss an election.
Encourage Community Engagement: It provides a space to connect with other South Asian voters and share insights, fostering collective participation and building a stronger civic voice.
